Vodka
Vodka is a spirit that is typically made from grains, but can also be made from fruit or other sources, provided that it is designed to be neutral in character. It can be flavored with fruits and/or botanicals in what are referred to as ‘flavored vodka.’ Vodka’s origins are in Eastern Europe (Russia and Poland specifically) and the word vodka is a diminutive for the Russian word of water (voda), essentially translating as little water. While relatively unknown in the US as recently as the 1940s, vodka is now incredibly popular and its neutral properties make it a valuable component in a variety of cocktails. Because it is a neutral spirit, quality is typically linked to ‘smoothness’ and ‘cleanliness’ rather than complexity of flavor
Common vodka based cocktails include the Cosmopolitan, Moscow Mule, Lemon Drop and Bloody Mary, to name only a few.
